Wayne was elected to his first term as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for Grande Prairie-Wapiti on March 3, 2008. In addition to his regular MLA duties, he also serves as a member of Treasury Board, the Cabinet Policy Committee on Public Safety and Services and Public Accounts.

From March 2008 until January 2010 he served as chair of the Cabinet Policy Committee on Resources and the Environment and as a member of the Standing Committee on Resources and Environment.
